Lovebug

Lovebug, acrylics on canvas board, 6″ x 6″

Another quick little last minute painting before the Moss Street Paint-In this Saturday from 11am-4pm (spot #40, corner of Mackenzie, just south of Fairfield)! A bit out of my comfort level subject-wise, but I thought that this little bug was really cute with its heart shaped spot! Thanks to Eltasia on Deviant Art for the reference photo.

Hello, my name is Sam. I like nuts. Acrylics, 8″ x 10″

A quick little painting before the Moss Street Paint-In show.

I really liked the expression of this little guy. Squirrels are very expressive and I love their interactions with humans. We used to have a little guy like this (named Bob) who would just sit around on his hind legs and wait for his daily peanuts, right in front of our patio door in Quebec City. It drove the cats bonkers.

Thanks to Eltasia on DeviantArt for the great reference photo!

The Lookout

The Lookout, Acrylics, 12″ x 24″

I decided to do another crow painting. The Lookout features the beautiful view of the Olympic Mountains that we have on Dallas Road at the end of Cook Street in Victoria.

After my last exhibition, several people contacted me to buy the other crow painting Haters Gonne Hate (that piece that is not for sale because it is going to be part of a bigger project).  Since people in Victoria love crows (and I do too!), I wanted to make a piece that I can put up for sale for my next exhibition at the Moss Street Paint-In next July 15th.

Danny (The gentle therapy horse)

Danny (The gentle therapy horse), Acrylics on canvas, 16″ x 20″

Just got back from my trip to Quebec and was able to do the finishing touches to this commission. It is due tomorrow, so got it done on time, yay!

Danny is a very sweet, very gentle horse from the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association, a great non-profit that uses horseback riding for people with disabilities. I was lucky to meet Danny for a photo shoot and was very impressed by him.

It is for a birthday present and I am really excited for the client to receive it tomorrow!

À bientôt 🙂

Effie Trinket (The Sharpei)

Effie Trinket (The Sharpei), Acrylics on canvas, 10″ x 10″

This is the second commission that I received from the same couple as Jasper (The Goldendoodle). It is a painting of their daughter’s dog, Effie Trinket.

They wanted a background with cherry blossom petals. I think that it really brings out the sweetness in Effie. It was very interesting to paint two dogs that were so different from one another! Great experience 🙂

This was the reference photo used for this painting:

Next, I will be working on a horse commission. À bientôt!

Jasper (The Goldendoodle)

Jasper (The Goldendoodle), Acrylics on canvas, 10″ x 10″

This piece is one of two commissions that I received from the same couple. Jasper is their son’s dog and he seems like such a nice, very distinguished dog. I almost felt like painting a monocle on him!

I got to meet Jasper when I delivered the painting and I was really please to see that it looks like him 🙂 They really liked the painting, so I was very thrilled about that!

For reference, this is the photo that was used to paint this piece:

I will post the other commission next.

Gotcha! (A big cat is still a cat…)

Gotcha! (A big cat is still a cat…), Acrylics, 24″ x 36″

I’m finally done! It seems like it took me a long time to work on this piece. My first “big” piece (2 feet by 3 feet).

I love cougars! I love how graphic their faces are and how their physique is sleek and graceful. However… they’re still cats! It’s hard to resist a swinging tail, even if you’re a majestic beast!

Thank you Deirdre (DeeOtter) for the amazing reference photo on DeviantArt and giving me permission to use it for my art.

I’m so thrilled that I finished this painting on time for the Fairfield Artist Studio Tour in which I will take part next weekend. Come see me and two other artists (Linda Skalenda and Valerie Wells) in the parking behind Mother Nature’s in Cook Street Village!

I will always love you Girl! (Marsh Wren)

I will always love you Girl, Acrylics, 5″ x 7″

I realized that I didn’t paint any brown bird yet..  So, here’s a little marsh wren, singing its little heart out for the laaaaadies!

I’m still in the middle of painting my large cougar painting, but I thought I’d take a little break and add another piece to my little birds small paintings collection.

I hope to be able to finish that big painting by the end of the weekend! Then again, I might get side tracked by another small painting.. Ha!

À bientôt!

Purple Finch

32_PurpleFinchMed

Purple Finch, Acrylics, 5″ x 7″

The fifth painting in my little birds series (of little paintings!). The purple background probably entered my subconscious because it’s Easter weekend, hehe. I love the colours on these little guys. This one was scouting my grandparents’ bird feeder,  probably waiting for me to leave the area.

I used to get really confused between the purple finch and house finch.. until I saw a purple finch. Then I realized that all the previous ones that I saw were house finches!

I just noticed that all my five paintings in this series have birds facing left. I’m wondering if I should continue that trend for the sixth or break the pattern and rebel with a right facing bird. Mmmm, decisions, decisions.

Gotta start working on the cougar painting background tomorrow!

À bientôt!
